Question: Can you tell me what year Mountbatten Way was built?

I want to know for a book that I am writing that features the Lawton & Wilson Motorcycle dealer whose site once stood where the west side of Mountbatten Way begins.

Hi Charles

Moutbatten Way was built between 1978 and 1980. The land it was built on was reclaimed from the sea and the old seafront would have started just before the railway tracks as early as the 1940s

There is an advert in the Hampshire Telegraph dated Friday 28 August 1959 for Lawton & Wilson which shows that in addition to their main branch at 242 West Street Fareham they had premises at 156 - 264 Millbrook Road, Southampton. This would place them next to the Malt Kilns just 200m southeast of Millbrook Station, north of the railway on the stretch of the old Millbrook Road now demolished and under the dual carriageway.

Charles White, I recently purchased a Royal Enfield 250 with a badge on the rear mudguard supplied by Lawton & Wilson. I would be very interested In knowing about them especially if any sales records exist. I also have a 600 Norton Dominator with a similar registration number which may have been supplied by them too.

I worked for Lawton and Wilson in 1959 to 1960 but if sales record exist, I don’t know where you would find them.
Here are some of my recollections from when that period..
Their site was located at Millbrook on what is now Millbrook Road East just two hundred metres on the Southampton [East] side of Millbrook station. The site was demolished in 1978 –80 when Mountbatten Way was constructed and Lawton and Wilson once stood at the point where the west end of Millbrook Road East terminates and Mountbatten Way commences. Because Millbrook Road East was once a one-way street in a westerly direction until it reached the junction with Paynes Road, Lawton & Wilson was accessed from the west by following the road into Paynes Road and then turning right into Waterloo Road; right again into Almond Road and right into Millbrook Road East with the motorcycle shop on the left. Turning sharp left into the site allowed one to access a gravelly car park or a gravel path which led to the workshop down a slight hill. The premises were built on two levels on the side of a hill with the upper level at road level and the lower level opening out close to the main Southampton to Bournemouth railway line which ran alongside the rear of the property. The motorcycle premises were separated from the railway by a stout mesh-type fence. The upper level contained the parts department and sales and showrooms with more than a hundred new and second hand motorcycles lined up. Lawton and Wilson was a main dealer for Royal Enfield motorcycles and one of the two partners was Syd Lawton, a former motorcycle racer. Syd Lawton raced a Norton prior to WW2 and between 1947 and 1952 made 12 appearances in the Isle of Man in the Manx GP and the TT. He competed mainly on AJS motorcycles but his best finish was a third place in the 1952 Lightweight TT on a Moto-Guzzi motorcycle.
Barry Lawton, son of Syd, also raced and although a good racer he never quite reached the very top level although he did win the Thruxton 500 one year.
Lawtons were main agent for Royal Enfield motorcycles and the flagship superbikes were the Constellation and Super Meteor. In those days a provisional motorcycle license allowed you to ride a motorcycle of any capacity. Many were the time a lad of 16 or 17 would take delivery of his Constellation and roar down the Millbrook Road on full throttle. Half an hour later the company would send out the ‘float’ to collect the bent bike at Millbrook roundabout…
Syd Lawton, although retired from racing, was very enthusiastic about the sport and over many years he entered bikes ridden by many of the top riders of the day in the IOM MGP and TT and also in the Thruxton 500 – a long distance race for production motorcycles. He had some success too… later on Lawtons became dealer for Aermacchi-Harley Davidson race bikes which were very successful in lightweight classes in the 1960s.
I bought 1 1959 250cc RE Crusader Sports off them in 1960 which I used on the road for a while and in 1961, with help from Lawtons, I stripped and raced it at Thruxton and other racetracks in the UK.
Hope this is helpful.

Napps Way

15th April 2024

Why is the road called Napps Way (belonging to Napp, but minus an
apostrophe as is usual with such nomenclature)? Moreover, who or
what is, or was, “Napp” in the respective, possessive case?

Several years ago, I met an elderly man (probably in his late-eighties)
who lives on Bentham Drive, Liverpool 16, and during a conversation
with him whilst in a Northwest Passenger Transport Ambulance on the
way to the former RLUH (Royal Liverpool University Hospital), he told
me that he could remember (when he was a boy, living in Childwall,
Liverpool 16) that, “Where Napps Way is now, during WW2, there was
a two-man gun emplacement on the, then, open land to protect the
railway line passing over Childwall Valley Road - next to the railway
bridge - when suddenly, as they were loading a live “shell” into the gun’s
breach, the aforementioned “shell” accidentally exploded in the gun’s
breach killing both of the two soldiers, that had been manning the gun,
instantly! (Very sad, of course, but could - perhaps - two ghosts relating
to those two, very unfortunately and prematurely-killed soldiers have
haunted that place of their deaths ever since - and have any residents
of Napps Way - formerly and in its latest incarnation - seen two, WW2
(uniformed) soldiers unexpectedly appear in or near their homes?)
