I was remembering my happy childhood living at No 13 Newdigate Street with my Mum and Dad and brother. The street was our playground in the forties and fifties, playing on the steps and railings and swinging from the old street lamps. Also hide and seek round the Police Box at the Village Street end of the street. Old Normanton Congregational Church played a huge part of growing up. Sunday school twice on Sunday, Anniversary, concerts, annual Bazaar when Mum sewed and baked things to sell. Friday night there would be a Beetle Drive and then youth club as we got older.
Neighbours were friendly but always Mr or Mrs to adults and children alike.
I remember the street party to celebrate VE day, I was almost 3. Of course the soldiers in the Barack's were a normal sight and march pasts would be held in the Street with a podium set up for whoever was taking he salute. My parents became great friends with soldiers who were invited to our house for tea during and after the war.
We played out with friends from both sides of the street. I remember deep snow and long warm summers. As we got older long bike rides down to Stenson Bubble and Swarkestone.
I went to Village Street Infants and Junior School and remember the exciting day we all walked up to our brand new Junior School at the top of Coleridge Street. I then passed the scholarship to go to Homelands Grammar school for girls until I was 16. Very happy days indeed!

Hi Barbara, I was really interested to read your recollections of living on Newdigate Street. I am currently researching my family tree and my great great grandparents lived on Newdigate Street in 1887. My relative, John Henry Cartwright married Catherine Doyle at St Giles in the Parish of Normanton by Derby in 1887. At the time he was a Private in the 1st Battalion. I am assuming it was a Derby regiment. Catherine originated from Wexford, Ireland. I would be most interested if you have any recollections of the barracks, do you know St Giles church? It will help me understand a little of where they lived, what the street was like ie was it military housing or private rented. In 1903 they moved to Cornwall where John was posted to TREGANTLE FORT in Plymouth. Hope you can help??

Napps Way

15th April 2024

Why is the road called Napps Way (belonging to Napp, but minus an
apostrophe as is usual with such nomenclature)? Moreover, who or
what is, or was, “Napp” in the respective, possessive case?

Several years ago, I met an elderly man (probably in his late-eighties)
who lives on Bentham Drive, Liverpool 16, and during a conversation
with him whilst in a Northwest Passenger Transport Ambulance on the
way to the former RLUH (Royal Liverpool University Hospital), he told
me that he could remember (when he was a boy, living in Childwall,
Liverpool 16) that, “Where Napps Way is now, during WW2, there was
a two-man gun emplacement on the, then, open land to protect the
railway line passing over Childwall Valley Road - next to the railway
bridge - when suddenly, as they were loading a live “shell” into the gun’s
breach, the aforementioned “shell” accidentally exploded in the gun’s
breach killing both of the two soldiers, that had been manning the gun,
instantly! (Very sad, of course, but could - perhaps - two ghosts relating
to those two, very unfortunately and prematurely-killed soldiers have
haunted that place of their deaths ever since - and have any residents
of Napps Way - formerly and in its latest incarnation - seen two, WW2
(uniformed) soldiers unexpectedly appear in or near their homes?)
