Crookham Village briefly made the news in early June 1899 when, at ten o'clock at night, a boat carrying five soldiers capsized as they were returning to their camp in Aldershot. Three soldiers managed to wade to the canal bank, but two tragically drowned. As most locals know, the canal isn't very deep, which made it puzzling how two soldiers could have drowned. One explanation is that the canal had recently been dredged, which may have made the water deeper.
