We invite you to share your stories, historical insights, or fun facts about Catterick.
Catterick's name traces back to the Latin Cataractonium, derived from the ancient name for the River Swale, Cataractona, meaning "waterfall" or "rapids". Essentially, Catterick translates to "town on the river with the rapids." The Romans established a fort and settlement here near the ancient road of Dere Street, near an important river crossing. Catterick is one of the rare English place names that retain Roman roots, alongside places like London (Londinium) and Lincoln (Lindum Colonia), maintaining an unbroken link to Britain’s Roman past.
