To : The Irvine Family

Stromness, Orkney Islands, Scotland

Dear Relative,

I am researching my family history and have reached a dead end. I am hoping that you may be able to assist. Because I do not know who is actually related to me, I am sending this letter to random Irvine and Flett families in Stromness.

A lot of my research has been through, and with the help of, Familysearch.org, a free service for family research.

What we believe is as follows: It is only a snapshot, but it is at the centre of our search.

Charles Jerrison AKA Glossop b. 1809 in Derbyshire England, D 1891 in Oakleigh Victoria Australia. Came to Australia as a convict.

Married Janet Jessie Irvine on 9/4/1888 in Melbourne Australia b. 12/6/1841 in Stromness, d 1896 in Bendigo Victoria. Jessie came to Australia with mother Mary Morrison and siblings in 1857 aboard “Negotiator” out of Liverpool.

Jessie’s parents were Andrew George Irvine b.1810-1888 and Mary Morrison b.1819-1884 Married 1833 in New York USA.

His parents were George Irvine b. 1780-1841 married 10/3/1803 to Jannet Flett b. 1777-1858

His parents were George Irvine b. 10/2/1745-1784 married about 1772 to Jean Flett b. 1751 -1786.

His parents were George Flett b. 1715 Stromness married Mary Caird 1719 Orkney.

“Dykeside” is mentioned in the Irvine history also.

I have further unconfirmed ancestry lines, particularly the Morrison clan who worked for Hudson Bay Co in Canada.

You may be able to log in to Family Search.org and see the family tree.

Charles Jerrison/Glossop was my great grandfather. His parents were William Jerrison and Elizabeth Glossop of Derbyshire England. It is believed that he changed his name from Jerrison to Glossop to hide his convict past.

If this history is of interest or you can provide any family history, I would be most grateful. Please do not hesitate to email me if you need more info or clarification.

It would be an absolute joy to visit Stromness one day, but it is a very long way away.

Yours Sincerely

Keith Glossop
