I am struggling to find 'Ellens Nook' in Golborne where my ancestors lived and wondering whether it is the same as Hell Nook but was changed along the years? Any information would be wonderful. Thanks, Clare
Hell Nook has been called this since 1849.
I can't find any place in the newspaper archive called Ellen's Nook, which sounds similar to Ellenbrook which is a village near Worsley. Known as Ellen Brook in victorian times and could be misread if written in copperplate script.

I did some detective work and found some references to `Helen's Nook' in Golbourne'. One mentioned that it was near Bank Heath and another gave an address 'Holly Cottage' as being in Helen's Nook, Golbourne.
I couldn't find anything on old maps but found a 'Holly Cottage' on a 1960 Map which is on Hell Nook. This is near an area on old maps called Banks Heath.
This means you were right and Hell Nook and Helens Nook are one and the same.
I'm guessing an early mapmaker abbreviated Helens Nook and the name stuck. This is odd as there are no references to Hell Nook at all in the archive. Only Helen's Nook.
According to the newspaper Archive, Garton Common is named after a farm that is normally named after the original farmer. It had 12 acres of land. Looking at Google Maps the farmhouse is still there.

The most prolific Garton in the newspaper archive is William Garton who was on the Golborne Parochial Committee during the 1880s
William Garton would have been my great uncle!
If you google Gartons Limited you will find they were a very wealthy family with a huge factory with contacts all around the world through John, who was the inventor! Enjoy.

I am trying to find out why the lane is named Swing Swang?
It has been known known this since at least 1905 when hedge making contents used to be held here.
Swing Swang is often used to describe a fairground ride. I remember Swing Boats. Were they a bit like this or is Swing Swang another name for swings?
Swing Swangs are also mentioned in connection to orchards. Or were orchards just good places to have swings?
