Hill Terrace IV3

23rd April 2024

My grandfather was born in 1870 at 2 Lady Lane, Elgin. His residence at the time of his marriage to my grandmother was 8 Lady Lane, Elgin in 1892.

My grandparents' two oldest daughters were born in Elgin. Their oldest daughter was born in 1894 at 8 Hill Terrace, Elgin, and their next daughter was born at the same location (8 Hill Terrace) in 1896.

A historical plague affixed on a building found in this location on Google Earth shows that Hill Terrace was "formerly Lady Lane." Based on official birth and marriage records that I've ordered from the General Register of Scotland, and Google Earth information, can I assume correctly that the street name change from Lady Lane to Hill Terrace in 1893 before the birth of my grandparents' oldest two daughters? If anyone can point me towards city records around this time, it would be greatly appreciated.

Napps Way L25

15th April 2024

Why is the road called Napps Way (belonging to Napp, but minus an
apostrophe as is usual with such nomenclature)? Moreover, who or
what is, or was, “Napp” in the respective, possessive case?

Several years ago, I met an elderly man (probably in his late-eighties)
who lives on Bentham Drive, Liverpool 16, and during a conversation
with him whilst in a Northwest Passenger Transport Ambulance on the
way to the former RLUH (Royal Liverpool University Hospital), he told
me that he could remember (when he was a boy, living in Childwall,
Liverpool 16) that, “Where Napps Way is now, during WW2, there was
a two-man gun emplacement on the, then, open land to protect the
railway line passing over Childwall Valley Road - next to the railway
bridge - when suddenly, as they were loading a live “shell” into the gun’s
breach, the aforementioned “shell” accidentally exploded in the gun’s
breach killing both of the two soldiers, that had been manning the gun,
instantly! (Very sad, of course, but could - perhaps - two ghosts relating
to those two, very unfortunately and prematurely-killed soldiers have
haunted that place of their deaths ever since - and have any residents
of Napps Way - formerly and in its latest incarnation - seen two, WW2
(uniformed) soldiers unexpectedly appear in or near their homes?)

Willems Avenue GU11

8th April 2024

It is named after the Willems Cavalry Barracks.

It got the name Willems from either..

Battle of Willems 1794 between Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany and a Republican French Army at Kortrijk, Belgium

or William (Willem Frederik George Lodewijk) II
King of The Netherlands, who served in the British Army and commanded troops during the Battle of Waterloo

As King Willem was often depicted wearing a Hussars uniform, I would say the Barracks, then subsequent road and park was named after him.

Does anyone else have any information?

Belmont Row B4

My Grand parents Thomas William Corrall and Sarah lived at 50 Belmont Row circa 1900 opposite the Lock keepers cottages still standing, My Mum was born there in 1909 and when older courted my Dad along the canal. My grandfather's house was also a newspaper agents shop and lamp oil seller. He also down in his celler made regimental badges to subsidise his five sons, two daughters and wife. My mum's sister Lillian married a man from another nearby road his name was Leonard Hart, he was the main man that ran Curzon Street Railway station.

Bowen Street SA11

7th April 2024

My Grandmother lived in Bowen street, we lived on the end house in pendrill street, the council moved them as the houses were being pulled down, I remember a house that was a shop in the street, my grandmothers house as you opened the front door you stepped down straight into the living room, then out to a tiny kitchen, between the kitchen and living room was a wooden curved staircase leading up to a bedroom, no bathrooms then, there was a back door leading into a small garden with an outside loo. I would love to see old photos of the street as it was.
