I was born in the front room of 29 Union Street, Long Eaton, in 1947. A number of relatives were born and lived in Union Street from about 1866, and one, Jean Smedley, was born in the same front room a few years before. My recollection of Union Street includes that it was cobbled and there was the Locomotive Inn on the corner. The salvation Army used to disturb the peace on Sunday mornings by playing outside our home, which really annoyed my father. Next door to us were Mr and Mrs Cross and their children on one side, and Mr Gent on the other At the rear of 29 Union Street we had a little garden which had only marigolds and a small privet hedge behind a low picket fence, which was also black. The soil was black from the coal dust that blew in. I remember making little canals in the soil/coal dust and sailing paper boats in it. At the bottom of the garden was a brick wall and on the other side, the gasworks. At night I watched the gasworks from my bedroom window. No doubt it would be regarded as unfit for people to live in nowadays, including that the coal gas manufacture undoubtedly exposed us to a lot of carcinogens. There were outhouse toilets at the side of these little gardens, and in the middle of the space between the entries was an old pump for pumping water from a well. I recall use of the water was banned due to the risk of polio and other diseases. If anyone would like more information about what it was like to live in that area at that time, they can telephone me on 0423 504 490, in Australia.
